Of course the time and place of this story means that Twain uses language that some today would find offensive, because many people these days ignore the historical context of any story. Her vantage point is solidly built on assumption, suspicion and crippling self doubt. There's the influence of the mysterious movement of earth known as the precession, as the position of the morning star slowly moves around the twelve constellations as it rises in the morning, a movement that takes almost 26,000 years to complete, a period much longer than human history. I was definitely surprised by the humor and how much I related to what the authors were saying.
